Attack on US official in Madagascar
By Richard Hamilton
BBC, Antananarivo
There has been an attack on a member of staff from the US embassy in Madagascar.
It happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, but details have only just begun to emerge.
The US embassy says it is too early to say whether it is a terrorist incident.
It has only confirmed that a grenade was lobbed over the wall of the compound where one of their members of staff lives, in the residential suburb of Ivandry.
Embassy to remain open
The area is well known as a place for housing staff from the embassies.
They say the grenade bounced off the outer wall of the house and landed in the garden where it exploded, causing widespread damage to property.
No-one was injured in the attack.
The embassy says this is the first such incident of its type in Madagascar.
Ravalomanana's party won the December parliamentary election
They are warning their staff to be extra vigilant but say the embassy will remain open at least for the time being.
Intelligence experts from the United States visited the country at the end of last year.
They were investigating reports about the sighting of a man believed to be one of the chief suspects in the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam embassy bombings in 1998.
But embassy staff are not admitting any direct connections between the two incidents.
Earlier on Friday, the country's President Marc Ravalomanana made a speech at the opening ceremony of the new parliament, in which he specifically mentioned that Madagascar wanted to play a role in international politics and would help in the war against terrorism. _________________ Envie de rencontre d'homme et de femme malgache ?
